Montreal Canadiens trade Jakub Jerabek to Washington Capitals

The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenceman Jakub Jerabek to the Washington Capitals for a fifth-round pick in 2019.

The 26-year-old was in his first season in North America after coming over this summer from the KHL. He played 25 games in the NHL, scoring one goal and adding three assists. He played in 17 games with the AHL’s Laval Rocket scoring one goal and adding 10 assists.

He has been a healthy scratch lately, and it became clear that the Canadiens would rather pick up something for him as he was drawing some interest around the league.

This is the first trade made by the Canadiens at the deadline, and it can be expected that more are to come before Monday afternoon.

Jerabek will fit in in Washington, where the Capitals are heading towards the playoffs. He is a player who can move the puck well from the back-end, and was one of the best Habs defencemen at doing that.

He is an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the season.
