Winter Olympics 2014: Martin St. Louis named to Team Canada, replacing Steven Stamkos

Since being left off of Team Canada on January 7th, Martin St. Louis has put up 16 points, in 14 games, and went on a 10 game point streak. It’s almost like he was sending his boss and other Hockey Canada decision makers a message, and the message was received.

St. Louis has been named as the replacement for Steven Stamkos for the Winter Olympics, likely moving from not on the team right up to Sidney Crosby’s right wing.

The ageless St. Louis has 25 goals and 29 assists for 54 points in 56 games, pacing for 37 goals and 79 points at the age of 38. He leads the Tampa Bay Lightning in points by a whopping 13, playing a whopping 21:49 per game.

St. Louis’ commitment to conditioning has seen him remain an elite player well past his prime, and even leaving his talent aside, his determination and drive are huge bonuses for a stacked team that could be considered a bit short on those kinds of players.

St. Louis previously represented Canada in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, co-leading the team in goals with 2. He has also represented Canada in the 2004 World Cup win, with 2 goals and 2 assists in 6 games. The most recent time St. Louis represented his country though was the World Championships in 2009, where the pint-sized forward put up 15 points in 9 games.
