Which Montreal Canadien Wore It Best: #55

Ulanov_medium

The centerpiece of the second trade of Stephane Richer away from Montreal, and also the trade that rid the franchise of the stain that was Darcy Tucker, Ulanov wasn’t ever meant to be a point producer. The 6’3″, 220lbs Russian defenseman was a veritable tank on the blueline. The defensive stalwart was a rough edged bright spot on some of the most sad sack teams in the franchise’s history.

Yes, we’re cheating a little bit here. Francis Bouillon spent most of his career with the Canadiens wearing the number 51, but he’ll be wearing 55 when he suits back up whenever the lockout ends. The Canadiens website only lists players under their most recent number, hence why Breezer was 71. So roll with it, people. An undrafted free agent signing by the Habs in 1998, Bouillon doesn’t play the way you would think a defenseman his size would play. Marc-Andre Bergeron he is not. He has always had a bit of a chip on his shoulder. His take-no-prisoners play has taken its toll on his body over the years, but it also earned him the affectionate nickname “Frankie the bull”, to go alone with the obvious nickname of “Cube”, which fits his stocky physique as well as his last name. After 3 years with the Nashville Predators, cut loose in the overhaul of 2009, Bouillon returned to the Canadiens fold this summer.
