Team USA buries Germany to open World Juniors

Team USA used its speed today to whirl around the ice and dominate the Germans en route to an 8-0 victory.

It took just 19 seconds for the USA to get a lead, and they wouldn’t even need to score again as they kept Germany to the outside all game and never surrendered a goal.

The Germans were coming off of a 9-3 trouncing at the hands of Team Canada just 24 hours earlier, and their exhaustion was pretty obvious by halfway through the game as the Americans skated around them without much effort.

Player of the game for Team USA was Russian accented Montreal Canadiens prospect Alex Galchenyuk, who had two assists, each coming withing 20 seconds of puck drop in the first two periods, and a beautiful goal on a wrist shot from the slot. Ray Ferraro compared his release to Steven Stamkos.

Galchenyuk barely played in the third period as the USA decided to play their bottom 6 guys a bit more since they didn’t have to worry about the score. His talent was evidence every time he touched the puck, and it resulted in Galchenyuk trending worldwide on twitter all morning.

Next up for Team USA is a real challenge as they face Russia tomorrow, also at 9:00AM EST. We’ll have the game thread for you in what should be the best game of the tournament to date.
