Nikita Scherbak claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Kings

The Montreal Canadiens have lost Nikita Scherbak on waivers, as he was claimed by the Los Angeles Kings today.

The Habs were attempting to assign Scherbak to the AHL, but since he has three years of professional experience (even though he’s still on his entry-level contract) he required waivers to tranfer leagues.

Instead he will become a member of the Los Angeles Kings, who will need to play him in the NHL as part of the claim. Should they attempt to assign him to their AHL affiliate, the Canadiens would be able reclaim him and assign him directly to the AHL.

Scherbak has an NHL career total of five goals and two assists in 29 games. He’s seen much better success in the minors, with 28 goals and 67 assists in 145 contests, but hadn’t been able to make much of an impact in five games — the only five he’s played this year — in a stint with the Laval Rocket.

He still has plenty left to offer, and perhaps he will discover it with his new organization.
