The Canadiens had a great performance versus the New York Rangers last night, holding the visitors to just two goals, and finally getting enough offence to pull out a win, snapping a five-game losing streak.
It was such a great performance that Carey Price is able to suit up for a second consecutive day, feeling relatively fresh after only facing 22 shots. He gets a chance for back-to-back wins at home after a sequence of losses of his own in November.
Martin Jones will take the net at the other end. Getting a second start in two days, he’s looking to bounce back rather than build upon a good result. A save percentage already ranking at the bottom of the NHL took another hit yesterday as he allowed five goals on 26 shots in a 6-2 loss to the Senators.
It wasn’t much of a return for Erik Karlsson to his first NHL city, and he may be looking to take out his frustrations on today’s opponent. It would be a breakthrough for the two-time Norris Trophy-winner if he could, as he has a mere 15 points in the season so far, and is currently playing on the Sharks’ third pairing. He’s had a lot of success versus Montreal in his career, with 32 points in 40 games, so the Canadiens hope his cold streak will continue.
There is no cold streak for Shea Weber. He scored two goals in very different fashion last night, first with a shot from the point and then a surprising rush up the ice for a breakaway goal. Already with three points in two games, he’s leapt ahead of some of the defenders who have been in Montreal all year, and is just two back of moving into second among the defence corps. If Jones isn’t able to turn things around, he could find himself there as early as tonight.
