Canadiens vs.Panthers second period thread

The Habs took a penalty 50 seconds into the first period with Tomas Fleischmann sent off for hooking. The Panthers‘ powerplay has been very good of late, with a 90 percent efficiency over the past then games. Thanks to the efforts of Paul Byron and Lars Eller, the Florida powerplay was unable to establish any zone presence, and the Canadiens killed the man-advantage allowing only a single shot on goal.

Ben Scrivens looked impressive, making a couple of incredible saves within the first ten minutes of the period. The Panthers made a push around the seven-minute mark of the first period, but Scrivens used his Cornell-educated legs to make a couple of pad saves to keep the game scoreless. He could be criticized for not controlling the rebounds that led to making those incredible saves, but since he recovered in the end, you got to let it slide.

The Panthers had control of the game, collecting nine of fourteen combined shot attempts when Dmitry Kulikov played the puck with a broken stick and was penalized. Max Pacioretty broke the deadlock, roofing a shot past Roberto Luongo’s glove to give the Habs a 1-0 lead.

Lars Eller took a penalty with 5:31 remaining in the first period, giving the Panthers’ red-hot powerplay another chance to go to work. The Habs looked to have killed the man-advantage again, but with one second remaining Aleksander Barkov buried his tenth goal of the season to tie it 1-1.

The Panthers ended up dominating possession in the first period, with a 22-13 overall lead in shot attempts, and an 18-7 lead in five-on-five shot attempts.
