Canadiens vs. Avalanche second period thread

The Habs jumped to a 5-0 lead in shots on net within the first five minutes of the game. They were coming on strong, amassing ten shot attempts in the process.

The Habs broke through on their seventh shot on net and twelfth shot attempt in just under eight minutes. Tomas Plekanec carried the puck up the ice on his line’s second odd-man rush of the period, and dropped it back to Andrei Markov who fired home a one-timer for his fourth goal of the season.

The Habs gave the Avs a powerplay chance midway through the first period that started with Nathan Mackinnon ringing a shot off the post. The Avs put up two shots on net on four shot attempts, but couldn’t convert the powerplay into a goal. Moments later, the Habs would get a chance on the man advantage, and despite controlling the puck in the offensive zone for a bulk of the time, and putting up three shots on net on five shot attempts, could not extend their lead to two.

The Habs fired off eleven shots and and 21 shot attempts in the first period. Their lead in possession was actually not as wide as it seems as the Avalanche put up 18 shot attempts but only six shots on net. Actually, the Habs blocked ten shots in the first period, which definitely contributed to the Habs not allowing a goal in the first period.
