Canadiens vs. Ducks third period thread

The Habs continued to build off a very strong first period, and opened the scoring on a quick and well-executed play starting with Lars Eller recovering the puck along the offensive-zone boards and feeding Andrei Markov at the point who found Alex Galchenyuk in place inside the right face-off circle where he fired off a one-timer to beat John Gibson to put the Habs up 1-0.

Greg Pateryn was checked from behind about five feet from the boards by Andrew Cogliano, but Cogliano was not given a penalty. Instead, Max Pacioretty was sent off for roughing after he came to the defense of Pateryn who hit the boards with his face. Michel Therrien went into full-rage mode and was assessed bench minor for his passionate tirade to the refs.

In the end the Ducks had a two-minute four on three followed by another full two-minute five on four. The Habs killed both penalties, with the Ducks firing off eight shots on net on eleven shot attempts in a four minute span. The Ducks’ momentum carried over into five on five play, and with 5:32 left in the second period, Jamie McGinn tipped a Hampus Lindholm shot that Mike Condon couldn’t contain and flung his own rebound into the net to tie it 1-1.

The Habs gave up 18 shots on net in the second period, but also had to kill three penalties. The Ducks were trying to antagonize, and didn’t exactly succeed. Michael McCarron threw down in defense of Lars Eller, who took a hit from Kevin Bieksa looking for the puck in his feet. Seconds later, the Ducks were back at it again, with Ryan Garbutt throwing a slight fist at Mike Condon’s face as he crashed the net. He was assessed a penalt on the play, giving the Habs 1:31 of powerplay time to start the third period.
