With his season for North Dakota officially over, even though he was held out almost the entire second half of the year with a wrist injury, the Montreal Canadiens have inked 2010 fourth round draft pick Mark MacMillan to a two year entry level contract.
MacMillan is a lanky, speedy center who made a name for himself as an offensively minded player in the NCAA, breaking out a bit this year after three seasons of little growth. MacMillan put up 16 goals and 9 assists in 29 games this season for North Dakota, bringing his total NCAA career to 46 goals, 53 assists, for 99 points in 151 games.
Those aren’t the numbers of a blue chip prospect or anything, but Trevor Timmins has remained high on MacMillan as a prospect, and his long term bets have paid off before.
MacMillan’s number one asset is his skating, which can cover for a lot of flaws in other areas. He was an ace faceoff man this past year, clocking in at over 57%. Expect him to join the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate next season after finishing his degree this spring.
