The Montreal Canadiens have signed Nicolas Deslauriers to a two-year, one way contract extension.

Renaud Lavoie says the contract has a cap hit of $950,000. The one-way part of the contract means he will make that whether he plays for the Canadiens or in the AHL.

Deslauriers was acquired at the beginning of the season from the Buffalo Sabres for defenceman Zach Redmond. He started the season with the Laval Rocket where he had three goals and two assists in 14 games. But in the NHL, he found a lease on life, with seven goals and three assists in 36 games.
Deslauriers can’t be counted on to provide that type of scoring going forward, but he provides an energy that is useful on the fourth line.
The cap hit and term is reasonable, and while you could spend that on someone else, Deslauriers’ play hit another level playing for the Canadiens.
He was set to become an unrestricted free-agent on July 1.
