On Monday afternoon Montreal Canadiens General Manager Marc Bergevin announced the recall of left wing forward Sven Andrighetto from the American Hockey League St. John’s IceCaps.

After morning skate today it was revealed that Artturi Lehkonen was out with an upper body injury, and that he is expected to miss a week of action. Daniel Carr is back up already with the club, and the Canadiens were only at 12 forwards ahead of a busy week that sees them play four games total against Boston, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Chicago, therefore calling up Andrighetto will prove to be prudent.
In ten games with the St. John’s IceCaps, Sven Andrighetto scored five goals and put up six assists, leading the team by scoring at a 1.10 points per game pace in his time with the farm club. In his first week in the AHL after being assigned by the Canadiens he was named the Player of the Week.

Andrighetto managed to clear waivers three weeks ago after clever timing by Bergevin, coinciding with all the teams finalizing their rosters. The calculated risk now allows the Habs to use Andrighetto when they need him or re-assign him to the AHL at will, and he won’t have to be re-submitted to waivers until after playing ten games or 30 days, counted cumulative over multiple recalls if necessary.
The Canadiens are currently running with one spare player on defence and one spare forward, meaning that they have one empty roster spot for the 23-man limit. This translates to a saving on the cap for the Habs.
