The Canadiens addressed their first-period scoring woes in their last game on Wednesday versus the Pittsburgh Penguins, but it came at the expense of any other offence in the contest. It’s been a theme of this season where working on one element of the game creates a hole in another, and the team is yet to find the consistency needed to string some wins together.
It was also a second straight game in which the Canadiens played a team on a back-to-back, and they were able to dominant a tired opponent in the third period in terms of shots, just not in terms of goals. Tonight’s situation is the same after the New York Islanders played in a shootout last night versus the Boston Bruins, presenting Montreal with an opportunity to get their record to .500 before heading on the road. As has been the case all season, it may be up to the defencemen contributing offensively to make that happen.
