Montreal Canadiens Host Team Draft Combine

And in doing so, we learn a little more about potential draft targets for not only the first pick, but later rounds as well as potential invites for rookie camps in the future (should players go undrafted, particularly overlooked Quebecois talent). No Nail Yakupov, Filip Forsberg, Ryan Murray or Teuvo Tervainen, which may be of note for the draft board, or maybe those players couldn’t fit this into their busy schedules.

A lot of goalies are on the Habs’ radar, which isn’t surprising considering the team has not concentrated on goaltending for a few years at the draft. The potential top picks (Galchenyuk, Dumba, Rielly, Grigorenko, Reinhart) should get a lot of attention. The next group is what I’d look for with the 33rd and 50th selections (Koekkoek, Matteau, Pearson, Jankowski, Hudon, Sutter, Bussieres, Whitney). MacEachern is a darkhorse for a 2nd round pick, but could be eyed in the 3rd round. Evan McEneny is interesting as he’s not much of a name for the draft, but could be a late round pick if Timmins has identified things he likes in his game from the past.

Meanwhile, Canadiens COO Kevin Gilmore will be making a presentation tomorrow at the simply titled “Hockey Forum”, a gathering of the top European hockey minds hosted through the IIHF in Barcelona, Spain, to discuss growing the game on that continent. His presentation will be titled “Running a Sustainable Hockey Business”, which will be followed interestingly enough by a presentation called “NHLPA as a Potential Stakeholder” by NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr. The two will then join a panel discussion titled “Reaching Hockey’s Global Potential” with representatives from Germany and the Czech Republic.
