After the news that veteran defender Karl Alzner was placed on waivers, today he cleared waivers and will be assigned to the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

Alzner will join the Rocket just before kicking off a three game week against Belleville, Lehigh Valley and Utica. With Brett Kulak still on recall, and Gustav Olofsson likely out for the year, the Rocket have been lacking a consistent piece on the left side of their defence. Alzner will likely become their top pairing option, alongside Maxim Lamarche.
The added benefit of Alzner clearing waivers is that he is now subject to the 10 game/30 day rule. If he plays less than 10 NHL games, or spends less than 30 days on the NHL roster he can automatically be re-assigned to the AHL. If he is also traded while in the AHL, his new club can assign him directly to AHL or NHL.
The Canadiens will save $1,025,000 on the salary cap (on a pro-rated basis) while Alzner is in the AHL.
