IceCaps Weekly Report: Charles Hudon is chasing history for St. John’s

IceCaps Player of the Week: Charles Hudon

In just one game this past week, the IceCaps leading goal scorer managed to register a pair of gorgeous goals and an assist in a 7-1 blowout of the Utica Comets. His two goals bring his season total up to 28, just one short of the IceCaps all time record of 29, set by Eric O’Dell.

His goal total also places him third in the AHL, and he’s done so while dealing with a rotating cast of wingers and a few injuries to boot. His chemistry with Nikita Scherbak was great, as that duo combined for three goals and two assists.

Bud Holloway: The veteran forward made IceCaps history against Utica this past weekend. With three assists, he set the IceCaps single-season points record with 60. He assisted on Morgan Ellis’s game winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win vs the Comets, before registering a pair of helpers the following day in the 7-1 blowout.

Michael McCarron: The gargantuan rookie wasted little time scoring upon returning to the AHL this weekend. He added a secondary assist on the game winning overtime goal on Saturday night. The following night, McCarron recorded a Gordie Howe Hat Trick, highlight by a gorgeous breakaway goal.

Gabriel Dumont: The IceCaps’ captain didn’t register a goal this week, but grabbed a pair of assists, both on goals by Jacob de la Rose. Dumont now sits just two points shy of being the third IceCaps to crack 50 points, and one goal short of 20 on the year.

Morgan Ellis: It was another incredible series of games for the young defenceman. He grabbed two goals, one of which was an overtime winner against the Comets. He followed that performance up with his 16th goal of the year, and added an assist on one of Hudon’s goals.

Mac Bennett: Bennett played in only one game this weekend and registered no points, shots, or penalty minutes.

Jacob de la Rose: After a tough stint in the NHL, the Swedish forward was returned to St. John’s and immediately found his scoring touch. He notched two goals over the weekend against the Comets, including this great power play marker.

Joel Hanley: After doing very little in the AHL for most of the season, Hanley ended his NHL run with a great run of form, collecting six assists in total.

Connor Crisp: Crisp’s season is over after it was revealed the young forward suffered a concussion earlier this season.

Darren Dietz: Much like Hanley, Dietz ended his NHL stint in a big way. He recorded an assist and his first NHL goal in a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Jeremy Grégoire: Like many of the IceCaps bottom-six forwards, Gregoire had a strong ending to this season. In the 3-2 win over the Comets, he notched his sixth goal of the year, with Jeremiah Addison recording his first pro point on the play.

Mark MacMillan: It was a quiet week for the NCAA product, he recorded no points in two games.

Tim Bozon: It would appear that Bozon has found his offensive game for St. John’s, he scored his fourth goal of the year in the 7-1 win over Utica.

Michaël Bournival: The veteran forward is on the shelf indefinitely with concussion-related issues.

Max Friberg: After several strong weeks of play from the Swedish forward, Friberg was held without a point in both games against Utica. This can be partially attributed to the influx of talent from the NHL forcing him down the lineup.

Ryan Johnston: Johnston had arguably his best week in an IceCaps uniform, displaying top notch playmaking skills and skating. He recorded three assists and was +6 in just one game against the Comets.

John Scott: The All-Star Game MVP received his well earned NHL call up to Montreal this past week. The Habs couldn’t pull out a win, but it was a massive moment for Scott. Following the game the Canadiens allowed him to return home to his wife and four kids instead of returning to St. John’s.

Zach Fucale: Fucale received just one start this week, and made the most of it to say the least. The rookie netminder stopped 47 pucks in a 3-2 overtime win against the Utica Comets.
