How Lars Eller scored his goals in 2013 – Part 1

February 2nd, 2013: Alex Galchenyuk skates into traffic and loses the puck while stickhandling, but Lars Eller is right there to retrieve it. He does a quick little deke and puts the puck through Ryan Miller’s fivehole. Though Galchenyuk made a nice play coming into the zone, Eller put himself in goal scoring position and made the move to score. This goal was an individual effort off the rush.

February 23rd, 2013: Francis Bouillon recovers a loose puck down low and sends it up to P.K. Subban on the powerplay. Subban puts a long pass deep to Galchenyuk who one-touches it to Eller, who snaps it through Martin Biron and in. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

March 7th, 2013: Brandon Prust gains the zone and stops up to draw in a Hurricane forward, then sneaks a short pass through him to Josh Gorges. Galchenyuk drives deep as this happens and takes both defenders with him, which leaves a Eller open as the late man streaking in, and Gorges hits him with a pass that he taps in past Justin Peters. This goal was a team effort off the rush.

March 13th, 2013: Gorges dumps the puck down to Gabriel Dumont, who’s strong on the boards and beats Kaspars Daugevins, then tries to go for the rebound. Robin Lehner is set and makes the stop, but Eller pounces on the rebound and roofs it before Lehner can figure out what’s happened. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

April 9th, 2013: Eller creates a turnover in the Canadiens‘ zone and immediately transitions into the attack with a nice pass to Galchenyuk, who tries to deke is way through traffic and towards the net, then sets up Prust for a shot that he can’t get through. Prust recovers the puck behind the net and centers it to a trailing Eller, who snaps it home with ease. This goal was a team effort off the rush.

April 9th, 2013: Subban steps up into the play to battle for the puck, which Eller finds and rims around the boards back up to the point to Galchenyuk. Galchenyuk sends a pass across the blueline to Nathan Beaulieu, who wait for a lane then fires a shot on net. Eller tips the shot and it fools Neuvirth and beats him. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

April 23rd, 2013: Puckhandler extraordinaire Martin Brodeur gives the puck away to Rene Bourque behind the net. Bourque works the puck to Eller, who swats it behind the net to Galchenyuk. Galchenyuk battles with the Devils defender and finds a way to center the puck to Eller, who snaps it past Brodeur. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

April 23rd, 2013: Jarred Tinordi absolutely destroys Mikhail Grabovski, which causes a turnover and sends the Canadiens off in transition. Galchenyuk puts a perfect pass through the neutral zone to Brendan Gallagher, who then puts a saucer pass in Eller’s direction. Eller then makes a nice move that fakes out James Reimer and scores on his backhand. Gallagher’s pass here was great, and Galchenyuk’s is possibly even better, but the methodology is that if the player scoring makes the goal possible, and not the playmaker, then it’s an individual effort. Reimer looks good to make a save after Gallagher’s pass, but Eller’s quick hands were too much for him, so it’s an individual effort off the rush.

Next we’ll break down Eller’s goals compared to last season, then it’s time for teamwide conclusions, and the end of this year’s series.
