Defenceman David Savard has been signed by the Montreal Canadiens to a four-year contract with an average annual value of $3.5 million.

The Canadiens just played Savard’s previous team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, in the Stanley Cup Final, and Marc Bergevin must have liked what he saw from the defencemen. The right-hander had five points during Tampa Bay’s playoff run, including an assist on the only goal in the Cup-clinching Game 5.
Offence isn’t a key feature of his game, with 166 points in 611 career games. He’s more of a defensive presence for his team, acting as a second-pairing minute-eater for his career, which had been played with the Columbus Blue Jackets prior to last season’s trade to the Lightning. That type of performance is the ultimate aim of this move as the Canadiens try to compensate for the loss of Shea Weber.
