Catching The Torch: Dec. 30 to January 5th

The Three Stars

1. RW Martin Reway

For a second straight week, Martin Reway claims top honours in the Three Stars for his impressive play at the 2014 World Junior Championships as he headlines offence for Team Slovakia. Reway was a significant force in his 1st game of the week against Team Canada, in which his power-play prowess would allow Slovakia to build up a 3-1 lead as he scored a goal and two assists, but unfortunately it would slip away in an eventual 5-3 loss to Canada. He would next pick up an assist as Slovakia’s offence would run dry in a 4-1 loss to the Czech Republic in the following game. In a rather tilted 6-0 loss to Sweden in the quarterfinals of the tournament, he would go without a point for the 1st time in the tournament. Reway would finish the tournament with four goals and six assists, good enough for 5th overall in tournament scoring while playing two fewer games than anyone who finished ahead of him. He was named one of Team Slovakia’s Top 3 players of the Tournament. Martin Reway was drafted in the 4th round, 116th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Draft.

2. D Dalton Thrower

The Captain of the Vancouver Giants Dalton Thrower continues to be a key cog in the success of the Vancouver Giants this season with a consistent stream of offensive production. Thrower would begin the week with a pair of assists as the Giants would take a 5-2 victory over the Prince George Cougars. He would pick up an assist in the next game, a 4-2 victory over the Kelowna Rockets. He would record an identical single assist in the next game, a rematch with the Rockets, but the Giants would find themselves on the wrong end of a 4-2 score in that game. He would finish his week scoring a goal and assist in a 4-2 win over the Tri-City Americans. Dalton Thrower was drafted in the 2nd round, 51st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2012 NHL Draft.

3. C Brady Vail

While not the most dynamic offensive talent in the Canadiens system, Brady Vail is working on having a memorable final year in the OHL with the WIndsor Spitfires. Vail would begin the week off a bit quietly, marking an assist in a 5-1 victory over the Plymouth Whalers. His next game would be one to remember, as for the second time this season and for the 3rd time in his career, he recorded a four-point game scoring two goals and two assists to lead a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa 67’s. He would pick up an assist in a 3-1 loss to the Belleville Bulls, before finishing the week scoring his 18th goal and 50th point of the year in a 4-2 loss to the Kingston Frotenacs. Vail’s 50 points in 40 games this season is good enough for 17th overall in OHL scoring and has him leading his team in points. Brady Vail was drafted in the 4th round, 94th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2012 NHL Draft.
