Montreal Canadiens place Zach Redmond on waivers, send Eisenschmid and McNiven to AHL

As the regular season draws closer, the Montreal Canadiens continue to trim down their roster. Last night seven players were cut from NHL camp.

Today, Zach Redmond was placed on waivers, with the obvious intent to have him lead the Laval Rocket again this season. Friday was the first day players could be placed on waivers.

Redmond split time between Montreal and St. John’s last year while also battling through injuries including a broken foot.

The expectation will be for Redmond to clear and likely head up the defensive unit in Laval alongside Matt Taormina, and help the younger players adjust to the AHL game.

In 26 games with the IceCaps last year Redmond registered 18 points, before adding another two points in four playoff games.

Redmond is the first defender with NHL experience to be cut from camp, leaving Eric Gelinas, Joe Morrow and Mark Streit battling for the final few spots in the NHL. Victor Mete also remains in camp, and he may be playing his way into a short NHL try-out to start the season.

The team also announced that Markus Eisenschmid and Michael McNiven will head to Rocket camp as well.

The Rocket start training camp next week.
