Canadiens re-sign Mike Weaver for 1 year

Shot blocking fiend and defensive defenseman Mike Weaver has come to terms on a one year deal to stay with the Montreal Canadiens for another season. He will earn a career high of $1.75M next season, which is still a reasonable dollar for what he brings to the lineup.

With Weaver’s signing, the Canadiens’ depth on defense is now set, with a top pair likely of Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban, followed by Alexei Emelin and Tom Gilbert, then Nathan Beaulieu and Mike Weaver. It’s looking good for Montreal.

Weaver was incredible last year in the playoffs, even when paired with players way past their expiry date like Francis Bouillon and Douglas Murray. His possession numbers leave a bit to be desired, but look for Montreal to take a giant leap forward in that regard with the savvy moves Marc Bergevin has been making in the last 24 hours.
