Montreal has their first nominee for a PWHL award as head coach Kori Cheverie was named one of the three finalists for the PWHL Coach of the Year.
She was nominated alongside Toronto’s Troy Ryan and Boston’s Courtney Kessel. The winner will be announced in June.
Cheverie, 36, is from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She is in her first year as a head coach in a full season role. She has been an assistant coach with the TMU men’s hockey team (previously Ryerson), and has been an assistant with Team Canada’s women’s team since 2021. She also coached Team Harvey’s in the PWHPA.
She led Montreal to home-ice advantage, with a second place finish. The team had a 10-3-5-6 record. Montreal’s six regulation losses were the fewest of any PWHL team. In addition to coaching the team, Cheverie also took on the task of learning French, even able to start her press conferences and answer some questions in the language by the end of the season.
The team was swept in the first round against third-place Boston in their best-of-three semifinal on Tuesday night.
