UPDATE: The Canadiens have announced that Joshua Roy will be out four to six weeks as he recovers from his injury. That will take him past the end of the NHL regular season, but could have him back in action in time to play for the Laval Rocket should they make the playoffs.

In a year that has been slightly better for the Montreal Canadiens injury-wise, a young, emerging part of the team’s future is out indefinitely. Joshua Roy suffered an injury in Tuesday’s game against Edmonton and will undergo further evaluation in Montreal.

He had blocked a shot with his hand on Tuesday, which may be the cause of the injury.

Roy, 20, has had a very successful first professional season. In 23 NHL games he had four goals and five assists. He added 13 goals and 19 assists in 42 games in the American Hockey League with the Laval Rocket.

Obviously any injury that ends his season will hurt the Rocket. Roy had been papered to Laval to be eligible for the post-season. There is no indication how long he will be out, but with less than a month left in the season and needing to undergo further evaluation, there isn’t very much time left to recover and return.

The Canadiens continue their road trip on Thursday with a game in Vancouver against the Canucks before games in Seattle and Colorado. Their next home game is March 28 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
