Alexei Emelin undergoes surgery

The Montreal Canadiens announced that defenceman Alexei Emelin underwent surgery on his right knee today.

The teams says recovery should take four to six weeks, which means that he will have plenty of time to recover before training camp, assuming he returns to the Canadiens. He will likely be left unprotected in the expansion draft, and has one year remaining on his contract.

Emelin missed the last part of the season and the first four games of the Canadiens first round series with the New York Rangers with a lower body injury, and it would be safe to assume that the two are related.

He did score a goal in Game Six of the series, and played in two playoff games. He played 76 games in the regular season with two goals and eight assists.

Nikita Nesterov, Brendan Davidson, and Nathan Beaulieu sat out of Games 5 or 6 of the Rangers series when Emelin did return to the ice.
