The Laval Rocket have come to terms with free-agent forward Alexandre Grenier on a one-year contract.

Grenier was drafted 90th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2011, playing primary with their AHL affiliate in Utica outside of nine appearances in the NHL. He signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers last summer, spending the season in Springfield where he recorded 44 points in 72 games for the Thunderbirds, good for fourth on their team.
The 6’5” right-winger, who was born in Laval, is about more than just his size — at least at the AHL level. Given the Canadiens’ depth at wing, there’s no question this is a move to strengthen his hometown Rocket, who could certainly use the help. Still, Grenier does play with an edge, and has racked up his share of penalty minutes over his AHL career.
Grenier, now a veteran of the league, will turn 27 before the beginning of the season. He can be expected to play important minutes for the Rocket and helps to replace some, though certainly not all, of the production lost through the likely departure of AHL scoring leader Chris Terry.
The newest signing does have a link to Habs’ assistant coach Dominique Ducharme, as he played a major role for Ducharme’s Halifax Mooseheads in the 2011-12 QMJHL season.
