2019 World Junior Hockey Championship schedule: January 2, 2019

Relegation Round

2 PM ET: Kazakhstan vs Denmark

The best of three series gets underway between two teams who have yet to win a game at the 2019 tournament. Kazakhstan has been more competitive seeing as they have actually scored some goals and limited their tough opponents, but Denmark was in this situation last year before sweeping Belarus. Can they survive a second straight year?

Quarter-finals

4 PM ET: Switzerland vs Sweden

Switzerland put scares into the Czech Republic, Canada and Russia and now they get a chance to face Sweden. The Swedes played with only 15 skaters against Kazakhstan as a stomach flu is making its way through the team. They won’t be able to take the Swiss lightly, but if they are healthy, they shouldn’t have a problem advancing to the semi-final. The game will be shown on TSN 3/5 and RDS2 in Canada and NHL Network in the USA.

6:30 PM ET: Canada vs Finland

After losing to Russia, Canada gets a tougher quarter-final matchup against a Finland team that beat them 5-2 in pre-tournament play. Finland has not looked like the team that defeated Canada, struggling to put full games together and generate offence against Sweden and the United States. Their coach put all of the pressure on Canada yesterday. That method didn’t work for Switzerland a year ago but the Finns are more talented than the Swiss were. The game will be on TSN 1/3/4/5 and RDS in Canada and NHL Network in the United States.

8 PM ET: Czech Republic vs United States

The United States beating Finland New Year’s Eve gets them a matchup against the Czech Republic and they will be the favourites in this game. The key for the US will be putting a full 60 minutes together. They have shown to be a team that is getting better as the tournament advances, and the status of Jack Hughes is still up in the air after he missed the last three games. The game will be on TSN2 and RDS2 in Canada and NHL Network in the United States.

10:30 PM ET: Russia vs Slovakia

Russia was great against Canada yesterday, but have seemed to play down to their weaker opponents in group play. They are the heavy favourites in this one, and will look to get back to the semi-final after a disappointing quarter-final loss to the United States last year. Slovakia put up a big game against Kazakhstan and was close against the US but wasn’t really close in their other group games and is a big underdog against the Russians. The game will be on TSN 3/5 in Canada, NHL Network in the US.

All games shown on TSN will be streamed on TSN Go in Canada, but it requires a subscription to TSN.
