The quarterfinals get underway, but unfortunately they are not staggering the games which means two games are being played at the same time which doesn’t make it easy for fans to watch all the games.
Quarterfinals
9:15 AM ET: Czech Republic vs USA
It may not be a surprise that these two teams are playing in the medal round, but it is a surprise that this is the 1A vs 4B matchup. No one would have expected either team to finish where they did in the preliminary round. The Czech Republic is being led by captain Tomas Plekanec who may be able to go against teammate Mike Condon in this one. Keith Kinkaid did start the last preliminary game for the Americans. The game will be shown on TSN1/3/4/5 in Canada.
9:15 AM ET: Finland vs Denmark
Finland seems unstoppable in this tournament, and that doesn’t bode well for the Danes. Patrik Laine and Aleksander Barkov are both having incredible tournaments and are the present and future of Finnish hockey. They have also been getting very good goaltending from Mikko Koskinen, who has saved over 93 per cent of shots he faced. Denmark, led by their top line of Lars Eller, Nikolaj Ehlers and Niklas Jensen actually have the top power play in the tournament, converting on 34.6 per cent of their chances. The game will be shown on TSN2 in Canada.
This is usually a marquee matchup but the two teams facing off today are more like the F teams than the A teams. There is a lot of talent in this game, but most of that is on the Canadian side. Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall and Derick Brassard are leading Canada offensively in this one. Gustav Nyquist, who started the tournament off with an impressive Kentucky Derby win, has seven goals in seven games for Sweden. The game will be shown on TSN1/3/4/5 in Canada.
1:15 PM ET: Germany vs Russia
Germany is leading a very surprising run at these Worlds, finishing ahead of the USA and Slovakia in Group B but will have a tough task ahead of them against the host country. Both teams will be relying heavily on players who just exited the NHL Playoffs, Germany with goaltender Thomas Greiss and the Russians and Alex Ovechkin. Russia also has the tournament’s top scorer in Vadim Shipachyov who has been rumoured to be seeking a move to the NHL this summer. He has three goals and 10 assists in seven games for Russia. The game will be shown on TSN2 in Canada.
