Which Montreal Canadien Wore It Best: #20

Known as “the little M” even though he was 4 inches taller than his big brother Frank, Peter was a star center for the Canadiens and one of only 4 players in team history to register a 100 point season, something he did twice. Mahovlich also hit the 30 goal mark 5 times in 7 full seasons with the Habs. In 1971, Peter and Frank became the 4th pair of brothers to have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup while playing for the Canadiens. That this isn’t more rare is pretty astounding. Playing on a line with Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt, Mahovlich set the Canadiens record for points by a centerman with 117, and assists with 82. The 4 time Stanley Cup champion was an affable, fun loving character on and off the ice.

One of the best players on the Canadiens during some of the worst years in the franchise’s history, Zednik was the most consistent scorer the Canadiens had in the 3 years prior to the last lockout. Zednik his 20 goals for three straight years, and even hit 30 in 2002-03. His greatest performance though, was his 4 goals and 4 assists in 4 games against Boston. His play allowed the Canadiens to upset the 1st place Bruins. Unfortunately though, since this is the Bruins we’re talking about, Zednik fell victim to goonery as Kyle McLaren laid a vicious elbow to his head that likely would have been a 20 game suspension by today’s standards. Then again, it’s the Bruins so he probably would have received a warning. The Habs won the series anyway.
