There couldn’t possibly be worse news for the Montreal Canadiens, but they’ll be without Carey Price for the remainder of this season and playoffs, and possible half of next season, after the goaltender was left hobbled early this morning and was told he would need back surgery in the coming days.
Though initially there were no details released about what caused Price’s injury, various sources have confirmed that the cause was Price continually carrying too much weight on his shoulders over the course of the last two seasons. The resulting damage to his spine requires surgery, or else his career would be in jeopardy.
While Dustin Tokarski hasn’t been very impressive this season, the Canadiens may have a bit of a surprise up their sleeves in Mike Condon, who will very likely get a legitimate shot to steal the starting gig away from Tokarski heading into the playoffs after a fantastic year for the Hamilton Bulldogs.
This season may be a write off without Carey, but at least it looks like he should make a full recovery. It could be a lot worse.
