The Montreal Canadiens sign Karl Alzner to a five-year $23M contract

One of the bigger names on the free agent market this year is that of former Washington Capitals defenceman Karl Alzner.

While he was sought after by several teams, it would appear Marc Bergevin is the winner in the race to sign him. It’s uncertain what the other teams including the Jets offered Alzner, but it’s clear that he liked what he saw in Montreal.

With the deal being five years, the cap hit comes in right around 4.6 million dollars a year,  making him the third highest paid member of Montreal’s defence behind Shea Weber and Jeff Petry.

In 82 games for the Capitals last year he scored three goals and added 10 assists, while also blocking 162 shots.

Stayed tuned for the instant analysis on the trade, and discussion on where exactly Alzner might slot in the lineup.
