Canadiens sign defenceman Stefan Leblanc to AHL contract

With the draft combine in the books, the Montreal Canadiens have begun to shore up the depth of their AHL team with the signing of defenceman Stefan LeBlanc.

The 21-year-old defender is signed to an one-way AHL deal meaning he’ll join the Laval Rocket next year in their debut season. Leblanc was an alternate captain the past three seasons with the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League. He wrapped up his career with a solid 11 points in 20 playoff games for the Steelheads after posting 37 points in 66 games during the regular season.

Leblanc joins the likes of Brett Lernout, Tom Parisi, Noah Juulsen, and Simon Bourque in the Rocket defensive core next year. The scouting report from his draft year shows that he’s made out to be a solid two way defender, who can rush the puck up ice. He struggled when placed in major minutes early on, but in Laval it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be thrust into that role right away, giving the team another mobile option on the blue line.
