The Canadiens place Alex Semin on waivers

James Mirtle from the Globe and Mail is reporting that the Canadiens will place Alex Semin on waivers.

The winger, who is currently dealing with an injury issue, only played in 15 games for the Canadiens this season, and while he had above-average possession numbers, there has been a clear lack of production from Semin, to the tune of one goal and three assists.

If he clears waivers, the Canadiens will be on the hook for $150,000 of his $1.1M contract, seeing as how you can bury up to $950,000 in the AHL. That being said, don’t be surprised if a team picks him up, considering his low cap hit.

If he does end up going on waivers, it will be an interesting decision, considering the Canadiens already lack depth on the wings, especially due to Brendan Gallagher’s injury. It could also be seen as a vote of confidence for young wingers like Sven Andrighetto, and Daniel Carr.

We’ll have more as the story develops.
