False Report: Guy Carbonneau met with Habs management for several hours

Peter Yannopoulos, an NBA insider from TSN Radio, reported that former Habs coach Guy Carbonneau met with management on Thursday night. We may want to take this report with a grain of salt.

Besides the fact that we don’t know whether or not the report is credible, it’s still an interesting situation.

Why meet with Carbonneau?

Are the Habs planning for a new interim coach?

Are they just looking for suggestions to fix the power play?

Carbonneau finished his tenure as bench boss of the Canadiens with a 123-83-23, making the playoffs in his second season. It wasn’t the worse performance by a Habs coach by any means, but it has to be said that he didn’t appear to be the best communicator, especially when you consider that Bob Gainey had to step in and regulate the Alex Kovalev situation.

Regardless, if this is Montreal’s contingency plan for the rest of the season, it’s probably not the worst decision, but there’s no way Carbonneau should be considered for the permanent head coach job. The Habs need to head in a new direction, and they can’t keep recycling old coaches to get there.

Whether or not the report holds any water remains to be seen, but if it does, it could be a reason for concern.

Update: Carbonneau did indeed meet with Bergevin, but so did a few other people
