Podcast: Welcome to the PWHL

With the first week of the Professional Women’s Hockey League behind us, Eyes on the Prize is proud to present a new women’s hockey podcast. Jared Book will collaborate with The Victory Press and its founder and editor Zoë Hayden.

This was special for me as when I first started covering the Canadian Women’s Hockey League in 2014, the only other person I knew was covering the league regularly was Zoë, who was based in Boston at the time. Eventually she started the women’s sports-focused Victory Press.

In this debut episode, we start by discussing what surprised us the most from our expectations from being in the women’s hockey world approaching 10 years. Personally, I was expecting a good response but over 30,000 fans through the first five games was way beyond my expectations.

We also talk about how the momentum surrounding the league is contagious and continues to grow through the first week of games as well as our initial impressions from those games and how the PWHL will shift the women’s hockey landscape going forward.

Finally, we deliver our (very) early impressions of each team. Obviously some teams only have one game, and others have two, so we have to be very careful not to be swept up in small sample sizes but there were some first impressions that may last all year.

The podcast does not yet have a name, but you could listen to it below or in your favourite podcast app of choice. You don’t need to resubscribe if you already subscribe to EOTP’s feed as it will be on the same one.
