Even though they played last night, the Panthers had a jump on the Habs once the puck dropped, jumping to a 7-1 lead in shot attempts by the five-minute mark of the first period. The Panthers were breaking up Habs’ rushes, counter-attacking and creating odd-man rushes, including a two-on-one that was stopped by an adept stick block by Mark Barberio as he blocked a pass going across his lane.
The Habs were creating some offense off the fly, with speed from Lucas Lessio creating some threatening looks. Phillip Danault was robbed by Al Montoya who acrobatically laid down his pad to stop a low shot from beating him.
This would be good for the Panthers, as minutes later they scored to go up 1-0 on a four on two created by a pinch gone wrong by Andrei Markov who got tied up with the ref in the offensive-zone corner, allowing the Panthers to break out with numbers, and ending with Vincent Trocheck’s 21st goal of the season.
Mike Brown dropped his gloves for a second time as a Hab, going toe to toe with Shawn Thornton. The fight was broken up by the refs, leading to Thornton giving them an earful.
