Michael McNiven signed to an entry-level contract

The Montreal Canadiens have signed training camp invite Michael McNiven to an entry-level contract. McNiven plays in the Ontario Hockey League for the Owen Sound Attack, even though he is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. McNiven only played in 24 games last year, but had a goals-against-average of 2.79 and a .914 save percentage. His stats were the best of the Attack’s three goalies by far.

While McNiven’s statistics are not amazing, there may be potential for him to turn into a decent professional goalie. By not drafting him, the Canadiens either had to sign him now or he would no longer be eligible to be signed by them or any other team. By signing McNiven, the Canadiens are doing nothing more than taking up a contract spot on a young, promising goaltender.

He will be sent back to junior at some point, as he is only 18. He is eligible to play two more seasons before turning pro.
