The Montreal Canadiens potentially solved the issue of who will cede their place for Shea Weber by placing his partner for some of last year on waivers. Karl Alzner was placed on waivers at noon, which was first reported by Sportsnet’s Eric Engels and later confirmed by Pierre LeBrun, among others.
The team has made the move official.

If he clears he’ll likely be assigned to the AHL’s Laval Rocket, and could become a more enticing trade option for teams, due to his ability to be assigned to either the NHL or AHL club.
In the 2017 off-season Alzner was Marc Bergevin’s big signing, inking a five year, $23 million dollar ($4.625 million per year) contract with the Canadiens. He played in all 82 games his first year, registering one goal and 12 assists, but this year found himself out of favour with the coaching staff. His iron-man streak of consecutive games came to an end on opening night, and he appeared in only eight total games, registering just one assist.
Alzner has this year, and three more years left on his deal, which also includes a seven team no trade list. If he clears waivers for the AHL, the team saves $1,025,000 on the cap as his cap hit will then become $3,600,000 while in the minors.
