Montreal Canadiens invite D Simon Desprès to training camp

The Montreal Canadiens announced this morning that they invited defenceman Simon Desprès to training camp.

The 26-year-old was taken 30th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2009 NHL Draft. He was most recently with HC Slovan Bratislava in the KHL where he had four goals and seven assists in 44 games.

His most recent NHL time was one game in the 2016-17 season with the Anaheim Ducks. His last extended period in the league was in 2015-16 when he had 32 games with no goals and four assists.

The 6’4”, 218 defenceman is a left-handed shot but plays on the right side. He has 43 points (six goals, 37 assists) in 193 career NHL games. He has a goal and six assists in 29 playoff games at the NHL level.

This is another low-risk addition to the training camp battle to the Canadiens’ defence corps.

There is no contract for Desprès, so the team is under no obligation to keep him around. Last year the team invited Eric Gelinas to camp and he ended up signing an AHL contract with the Laval Rocket.

Desprès is a Laval native.
