Pre-Game

  • This Joshua Roy kid…
  • He any good?
  • Ping @matt-drake
  • Happy birthday, Connor McDavid!
  • Let’s celebrate it with an Oilers loss, shall we?

First Period

  • In 2016, the Canadiens were on the hunt for a big, towering lumberjack type of a defenceman with their seventhround selection. With the 187th overall pick, they chose 6’5, 212 lbs Arvid Henrikson.
  • Just four picks earlier, the Edmonton Oilers had selected Laval native Vincent Desharnais. Would he otherwise have been playing in the bleu-blanc-et-rouge tonight? Certainly not an impossible train of thought.
  • Power play Habs! Nugent-Hopkins penalized.
  • Cole Caufield trips on his skates in a dangerous position. Darn it.
  • But he makes up for it moments later. 1-0 Montreal!
  • Just look at that sweet, sweet pass from Cap’n Suz. Look at it, I said. LOOK AT IT!
  • A Slaf with confidence is such a different player.
  • Will Cole bag that hatty today? He’s looking hot.
  • It’s been quite a slow affair, but Monty is looking sharp in net and Roy hasn’t looked out of place. I’ll take it.

Second Period

  • Edmonton doing their best to get that franchise record tenth win in a row.
  • They could really use a Monty in net though. Would make the feat a heck of a lot easier for them.
  • Is Pezzetta hurt?
  • Seems to be back again now. No more injuries, please.
  • Gally penalty means two minutes with 4-on-5 against McDrai. Can only end one way, can it not?
  • Apparently, this is a different kind of night.
  • Montreal hounds around the ice chasing those superior two, while somehow keeping them in check for two entire periods.
  • Of course, having Montembeault helps.
  • Do you hear that, Oilers fans? A Habs goalie can take you so much further.
  • Monty has learnt everything he knows from… Jake Allen. Give him a go. You won’t regret it.

Third Period

  • Well, that was quick.
  • Leon Draisaitl ties the game up at one-a-piece less than a minute into the third.
  • MSL challenges for goaltender interference, to no avail.
  • So now we have a tied game AND a penalty kill to sit through.
  • Hey, MackyD gets sent to the box for… Guess what, goaltender interference, cutting their man advantage short.
  • He just laughs about it. Not a very nice birthday gift from the refs.
  • It’s full on attack now from both ends of the ice.
  • Monahan so close to tuck in a tap-in from the crease. Would have been a beauty of a goal as well. Puck on a string between the Habs players.
  • Crowd now booing McDavid as soon as he touches the puck. Feels thrilling, like being at a soccer game in Europe.
  • Three penalties in total during the first two periods. Four penalties through the first half of period three.
  • Warren Foegele to the box for a blatant tripping on Joel Armia.
  • In the words of soccer transfer guru Fabrizio Romano: “Here we go!”
  • Excellent recognition from Jake Evans, who made up for losing the puck in a board battle by throwing his body in front of an Oilers attacker in the slot, thus breaking up the intended pass.
  • Regardless how this ends, it has been a fun third period. Certainly makes up for the initial two.
  • Let’s end this regular time with a penalty kill!
  • Hooking call on Gallagher tracking back to stop McDavid.
  • Un point!
  • 40-23 in shots. 1-1 in goals. We’re heading to overtime.

Overtime

  • Darnell Nurse tripping up Mike Matheson, whose stick ends up slightly too high. Another Oilers power play.
  • Evan Bouchard ends the game from the point, via the bar and in. Gah.
