Montreal Canadiens acquire Gustav Lindström, draft pick from Detroit Red Wings for Jeff Petry

The second Jeff Petry stint with the Montreal Canadiens had a short shelf life. The team announced on Tuesday that they have traded the defenceman to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for defender Gustav Lindström and a conditional fourth round pick.

The Canadiens will retain 50% of Petry’s cap hit with the Canadiens, which is just over $2.3 million as the Penguins retained 25% of his cap hit when he was traded back to the Canadiens.

Lindström is 24 and played 36 NHL games last season for the Red Wings, scoring one goal and adding seven assists. He is a right-handed shot. Over his career, he has played 128 NHL games with two goals and 23 assists. He has added 58 AHL games, 40 SHL games, and 128 AllSvenskan games in his professional career.

He was drafted in the second round, 38th overall, by the Red Wings in the 2017 NHL Draft.

The condition on the fourth-round pick is that Montreal will receive the later of Detroit’s or Boston’s fourth-round pick in 2025.

The trade notably reunites Petry with former Canadien Ben Chiarot. Petry is a Michigan native and his father Dan played several years for the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball.
