Montreal Canadiens acquire Alex Newhook

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche for the 31st and 37th overall picks in the 2023 NHL Draft and defenceman Gianni Fairbrother.

Newhook is a restricted free agent and will need to be signed to a contract. He was drafted 16th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, one spot after the Canadiens chose Cole Caufield.

Instant Analysis: The Montreal Canadiens are betting on Alex Newhook’s upside
Montreal goes to the same well they did when they acquired Kirby Dach a year ago.

The 22-year-old is from St. John’s, Newfoundland and is listed at 5’10”, 190lbs. He had 14 goals and 16 assists in 82 games last season with the Avalanche. He had 13 goals and 20 assists in 71 games the year before and added four assists in Colorado’s cup run.

This is likely a move the Canadiens had cooking alongside the negotiations for Pierre-Luc Dubois who looks like he is heading to the Los Angeles Kings.

This leaves the Canadiens with nine picks in the 2023 NHL Draft, including the fifth overall pick.
