Following a 4-0 defeat to the Boston Bruins and headed into their mandatory bye week, the Montreal Canadiens have fired head coach Michel Therrien. He leaves with a 194-121-37 record since starting his second stint in Montreal during the lockout shortened 2013 season.

Despite making the playoffs in all but one season, the furthest the Habs advanced under Therrien was an Eastern Conference Final, which with one of the best goalies in the world was not enough.

In the past two seasons the Canadiens bolted out of the gate, and then faded badly throughout the season. In 2015-2016 the roster was utterly decimated by injuries, and Mike Condon wasn’t able to shoulder the high volume of starts. Marc Bergevin took the blame in his infamous “It’s on me” press conference and Therrien was given a chance to prove the season was a fluke. This most recent year saw the Habs rocket out to the top of the NHL standings at 13-0-0. However since that point the team struggled to string wins together posting an 18-18-8 record.
