Last year Michael McCarron put forth an underwhelming performance at the National Junior Evaluation Camp, but he was with Team USA the whole way. This time, he’s been cut after just two games played. Part of the reason for the cut may have been his check to the head of Joel Janatuinen, but even with that, if he was playing well he would likely still be on the roster.
Chris Peters of CBS Sports says that the players who were cut are still in the mix for the World Juniors, but considering the tough competition to make the team in general, McCarron would have to be lights out in junior in order to make the cut now.
McCarron showed a lot of improvement at the Canadiens‘ summer development camp, but as it is with summer hockey, you never really know what you’re going to get. Last summer Brady Vail was a surprise early cut from Team USA, as well as the Habs’ training camp in September, and used that as motivation to put together a fantastic season. Yet he was let go by Montreal and is now with Carolina.
McCarron is already signed to an entry level deal, so this can not be his fate, but at some point he’s going to have to show a bit more as a first round pick.
