Marie-Philip Poulin named captain of Montreal PWHL

It was never in doubt. The first captain of the Montreal PWHL team will be the one, the only, Marie-Philip Poulin. She was officially announced as the captain at the Cirque de Soleil performance on Friday afternoon at the Bell Centre.

Poulin is the captain of the Canadian National Women’s Team, a role she has held since 2015, and was the captain of the CWHL’s Canadiennes as well. Joining her in the leadership group will be Erin Ambrose, Laura Stacey, Ann-Sophie Bettez, Kati Tabin, Ann-Renée Desbiens, and Kristin O’Neill. Ambrose, Stacey, and O’Neill will be alternate captains.

The 32-year-old is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, three-time World Champion, and two-time Clarkson Cup champion. She is a three-time CWHL MVP, and considered one of the best hockey players of all-time. The future Hall-of-Famer has a three-year contract with Montreal.

Montreal’s first game will be January 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Ottawa. It will be broadcast on TSN and RDS in Canada.
