Canada enjoyed a day off after defeating its first two opponents at the World Juniors by a combined score of 15-2. Those wins place them atop Group A with six points midway through the preliminary round. Joining them on six points is the host nation, Sweden. They haven’t scored as many goals as the two-time defending gold medalists they’ll play today, but they have keep both Latvia and Germany off the scoreboard in their contests so far.
These are unquestionably the top two teams in the five-nation group, and today’s game will decide which finishes in the top seed when it comes time to pair the top eight teams up for the quarter-finals.
Macklin Celebrini was the star of Canada’s 10-0 win over Latvia on Wednesday, while Otto Stenberg’s hat trick led Sweden to its win over Germany yesterday. It’s unlikely those players are going to enjoy as much offensive success today, but one of them could make the deciding play in what’s expected to be a close game.
