How Andrei Markov scored his goals in 2013 – Part 1

January 22nd, 2013: Usually on a 5-on-3 powerplay puck movement is key, but a couple of failed plays by the Canadiens leads to Max Pacioretty giving Andrei Markov the puck in the high slot. Markov waits, has no screen, but beats Scott Clemmensen with an absolute bullet of a slap shot. This goal was an individual effort on a zone play.

January 22nd, 2013: Markov receives a pass from Pacioretty and skates into the middle of the ice pretending to shoot before passing to Raphael Diaz. He drifts upwards a bit as Diaz gives it back and on-times it home. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

January 24th, 2013: Erik Cole wins a race to the puck behind the net off the faceoff and whips it up to Diaz on the right point. Diaz exchanges the puck back and forth with Markov before Diaz slides it to Cole, who one-times it on net. Michal Neuvirth makes the save but Markov pounces on the rebound and snaps it home. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

January 27th, 2013: Markov gives the puck to David Desharnais and drives deep. Rene Bourque slides into Markov’s spot and Desharnais hits him with a pass that he blasts towards the net, but it misses and goes wide. Brodeur is sprawling though, and as the puck comes off the boards Markov is there to flip it through him and in. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

February 25th, 2013: Desharnais ties up on the faceoff and Pacioretty gets in to win the puck back to Diaz. Diaz sends the puck to Markov, who immediately one-times it on net and beats Ben Bishop. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

March 27th, 2013: As TD Garden is imploding at the idea of blowing a lead against the Habs, P.K. Subban passes the puck from the right point to Tomas Plekanec on the half wall. Plekanec fines a huge lane to Markov, who shows a ridiculous amount of patience just waiting for Boston to make a mistake, then fires a wrist shot off of Zdeno Chara and through Tuukka Rask to tie the game. This goal just feels good to watch, and it was an individual effort on a zone play.

April 1st, 2013: Brendan Gallagher wins a puck battle off the faceoff and passes it up to P.K. Subban at the point. Subban walks the line and feeds the puck to Markov, who one-times it past Justin Peters. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

April 11th, 2013: Subban takes a slap shot that’s blocked by Tyler Myers, but Michael Ryder collects the puck and goes behind the net, setting up Markov for a shot. Markov passes to Subban instead, but Subban reverses it and Markov leans into a one-timer. Brian Flynn gets a leg in the way, which causes the puck to bounce up and over Ryan Miller and into the net. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

April 17th, 2013: Yannick Weber gets a shot on net that’s stopped by Marc-Andre Fleury, but Desharnais grabs the rebound and finds Markov going against traffic in the slot. Markov elects to go backhand and roofs it on Fleury. This goal was a team effort on a zone play.

April 27th, 2013: Lars Eller wins the faceoff and drives to the net, which provides a perfect screen for Markov. Markov shows his patience once again and wait for the perfect moment before thrown a wrist shot on net that James Reimer can’t see. Because of the perfect screen Eller provides, this goal was a team effort on a zone play.

Tomorrow we’ll break down Markov’s goals a bit further.
