Carey Price Signs for 6 years

Financial terms of the deal are undisclosed thus far, but Montreal Canadiens goaltender and face of the franchise Carey Price has re-upped on a long term deal.

Update: Price’s annual cap hit will be $6.5M per season, making the deal worth $39M. Price is now the second highest player on the team, and likely to be the highest paid player when Gomez is moved, sent to the AHL or bought out.

Price is the only goaltender in NHL history to have two seasons as a starting goaltender with a .920 save percentage or better before the age of 24, this is while playing in the most hostile environment for a goaltender in the sport.

Price has a higher cap hit than recent cup winner Jonathan Quick, but Price is two years younger, and signed for a much more reasonable term.

This is a good deal for both the Canadiens and Carey Price. It settles all the speculation from certain fans who believe Price doesn’t want to be a Canadien, and it pays Price for what he is, an elite goaltender in the NHL.

Price is now the 3rd highest paid goaltender in the NHL going by cap hit, although comparing his deal to other recently signed deals like Pekka Rinne’s or Cam Ward’s it’s pretty clear that the Canadiens did not pay over market value.

24 year old Carey Price is just entering his prime as a goaltender, and will likely still be on top of his game at 30 when this deal expires.

The Canadiens whipped up a highlight package of Price’s work here, sample below:

Price will have a conference call at 7PM Eastern time, which you can listen to on TSN990.
