Canadiens sign Tom Gilbert

With Josh Gorges traded to Buffalo and the Canadiens defensive core lacking a solid defencemen to replace him Marc Bergevin followed the advice of the fancy stats crowd. Gilbert has spent his NHL career playing for the Oilers, Wild and Panthers in recent seasons and has attracted a lot of interest due to his fantastic advanced statistics.

Many fans called for the Habs to take a chance on Gilbert last year but Bergevin opted for Francis Bouillon and Douglas Murray instead. A two year deal for the right handed defencemen is a fantastic pick up and will help to fill one of the major voids the Canadiens had going into this offseason. At 2.8 million a year for two years this signing might go down as one of Bergevins best as he replaced Gorges at a much cheaper price.
