The Montreal Canadiens have brought together the players who remain from last year with their off-season acquisitions and a handful of their top prospects for evaluation ahead of the 2018-19 season. In total, there were 67 players in Montreal vying for the 23 spots that are available for opening night, with 42 taking to the ice today.

This afternoon, the Canadiens will play their seventh annual Red vs. White Scrimmage, pitting players against one another in a slightly competitive situation. It will be a bit of a warm-up before the club starts its pre-season schedule on Monday, with the first of seven games before the official start of the new campaign.

The coaching staff has left the lines intact through the two days of drills they’ve run to this point, hoping to see a bit of chemistry develop among players who are still largely unfamiliar with one another. The newest acquisition, Nick Suzuki, has been playing a centre role between Paul Byron and Nikita Scherbak, while 2018 first-round pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi is also getting a good look in the middle between Nicolas Deslauriers and Artturi Lehkonen. A new face should be joining the team today as well, as professional tryout signee Joel Ward arrives in Montreal after being delayed.
