On Friday afternoon the Montreal Canadiens announced the recall of Darren Dietz and Charles Hudon under emergency conditions.

This will be Charles Hudon’s second recall of the season. He is currently the leading goal scorer for the St. John’s IceCaps with 20 goals in 58 games. Many analysts have dubbed him the best prospect in the organization, and were surprised that he wasn’t recalled earlier in the season.
As for Dietz, this is his first National Hockey League call-up, in the second year of his three-year entry level contract. Dietz has been a steady defencemen for the IceCaps all season, playing in all situations, and generally a go-to defender for head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. It is interesting that he was recalled over Morgan Ellis who was recently returned to the IceCaps after his first stint in the NHL.
Both players were eligible as emergency recalls. With P.K. Subban’s injury the Canadiens were down to five defencemen, and with the League minimum being six, Dietz was eligible to be an emergency recall.
Hudon’s emergency recall is more puzzling, as the Canadiens have not announced any injuries to their 13 healthy forwards. If we assume that Mike Brown was injured following his fight on Thursday night, there needs to be one more injured player in order for Hudon to comply with the emergency recall rules.
